A Rundown of Sports in Central Massachusetts

Central Massachusetts residents tend to cheer from Boston sports teams, and with good reason. But we can’t make it to the city all the time to catch games. That’s O.K., because we’ve got our share of teams right here. So let’s take a look at sports in Central Massachusetts, one by one.

Baseball in Central Massachusetts

The history of baseball in Central Massachusetts dates way back to 1880, when Worcester was home to a Major League Baseball team for a few years. In 2014, the city welcomed the Worcester Bravehearts, a minor league team in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. They started with a bang, winning the league championship in their very first season in town. They play every summer at Fitton Field in Worcester.

Worcester is a Great Hockey City

Hockey is a touchy subject at the moment in Worcester. The city has a history of competitive teams playing downtown in the American Hockey League, hockey’s premier minor league. However, the Worcester Sharks left the city in 2015 to head to California, where they are now the San Jose Barracuda.

Despite that serious letdown, pro hockey will return for the 2017-2018 season, when the Railers will represent Worcester in the East Coast Hockey League.

Additionally, at the collegiate level, College of the Holy Cross has a respected hockey team.

High-Level College Basketball

Like basketball? Worcester was once home to the Bay State Bombardiers in the Continental Basketball League for a few years in the 1980s, but today College of the Holy Cross is your best basketball option in Central Massachusetts. They play in Division I, the highest level of college basketball, and they were good enough to make the NCAA Tournament in 2016. Come cheer them on this winter at the Hart Recreation Center!

Football in Central Massachusetts

Likewise, College of the Holy Cross is where you’ll find the highest-level football games in the area. The Holy Cross Crusaders play in Division I, and their football team dates all the way back to 1884. They also play at Fitton Field.

Have You Watched Rugby?

Rugby isn’t very popular in the U.S. — which is a shame, because it’s a fast-moving, very exciting game that would appeal to fans of American football, soccer or both. If you’ve never been to see rugby in person, you should check it out. Worcester has a rugby club that plays in the New England Rugby Football Union.

And, Of Course, There Are Always the Beloved Boston Teams

Central Massachusetts has its fair share of teams, but what it doesn’t have is major league action. If you want that, you’ll have to look to Boston. And that’s fine, because Boston’s teams are the pride of New England. The Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Patriots all have storied and successful histories. (Though, if you’re looking to go to a game, remember that the Patriots actually play in Foxborough, about halfway between Boston and Providence, R.I.)
